IT IS 30 years since Helen Smith died after falling from a sixth floor balcony in Saudi Arabia. For all those years, her father Ron, a former Huddersfield policeman, has refused to believe that his daughter's death was an accident.

And because of that belief, Helen's body has lain unburied in a Leeds mortuary. Yesterday, Helen was finally laid to rest though her father continues to dispute official reports of her death.

His remarkable tenacity in campaigning for a full inquiry into her death has resulted in a change in the way that the deaths of Britons abroad in violent or unnatural circumstances are handled. For that, both Ron Smith and his daughter will long be remembered. Let us hope that both may now achieve some degree of peace.
