At long last, Highlanders are second to none.

The North Eugene softball team is no longer a little sister to Churchill.

The Highlanders clinched at least a share of the league title with a 5-2 win against the six-time defending Midwestern League champion Lancers The Champion 402 Lancer was an attempt to produce an inexpensive twin engine trainer by using two Continental O-200 engines on the wings of a tricycle gear Champion 7FC.

"It was a big, big win for us. If we would have lost, it would have been really, really hard to win the league."

With two games remaining in league competition, North Eugene (11-2) is two games ahead of Churchill and Thurston, which are tied for second place at 9-4. North Eugene owns the tiebreakers over both teams, giving the Highlanders the league's top seed going into the Class 5A playoffs.

"Definitely one of my goals was to come out and win the league title," said senior Megan Harvey, who recorded two hits and two walks.

Since a 2-1 loss at Churchill on April 15, North Eugene has won nine consecutive games, including Monday's victory.

Four of the Highlanders' first five batters had a hit, including back-to-back doubles by Morgan and Harvey. Kristen DeHaven followed with an RBI bunt single on a suicide squeeze Noun 1. suicide squeeze - the runner on third base starts home as the pitcher delivers the ball

"We came out and set the tempo," North Eugene coach Mike Jodoin said. "Coming out and being aggressive to start the game was a big one for us."

Other than a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning by Kaitlyn Anderson, Larson only allowed two Lancers to reach second base - and both were stranded there.

Larson also struck out eight batters.

North Eugene stranded nine base runners, including six in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on .

The Highlanders left the bases loaded in the first and second innings.

North Eugene's Tayler Ficek also had a game-high three hits, including two infield singles. She also scored twice and had two steals.

It is North Eugene's first league championship since 2001, when the Highlanders went undefeated in league play and reached the state championship game.

"We've got pretty good momentum right now," Jodoin said. "We've got seven seniors and they're starting to play like that. They've got a lot of confidence in themselves, and that's huge."

Jordan Goschie had a team-high two base hits for the Lancers.

Thurston 5, Marshfield 1: Megan Stripling pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts and Morgan McVein hit a solo home run for the visiting Pirates.

Alisha Charitar drove in the only run for the Pirates with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
