Justify Upgrades, NetReality Enhances Its Application

Priority Switch to Enrich "C-level" Understanding

NetReality Inc., the leader in network application priority switching, today announced the availability of WiseWan(tm) 5.0, which takes bandwidth management to the CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

 level.

WiseWan is a network application priority switch (NAPS), which enables a corporation or carrier to assign mission-critical applications top priority as they traverse enterprise networks. Today's bandwidth management products are mostly "for techies only", providing detailed -- often too detailed for the CIO level -- information on network consumption by protocol and IP address. Responding to user feedback, in WiseWan 5.0 NetReality has built upon WiseWan's already award-winning reporting capabilities to provide critical network traffic information in ways most meaningful to executives. Since many network managers are using WiseWan to justify upgrades to their management teams during these tight times, these are important new features.

"Today more than ever, WiseWan reports are finding their way into management team discussions, as organizations struggle to keep IT budgets under control," said Kit Waugh, vice president of marketing and business development. "With WiseWan 5.0, NetReality seeks to ease those discussions by allowing the IT team and C-level decision-makers to read technical network utilization information in a common language."

WiseWan 5.0 allows network managers to:

-- Group protocols.

Network managers can use this feature to group and shape, for example, all mission-critical business applications (Citrix-ICA, Oracle, SAP, Telnet), email applications (POP3, SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail. ), or all network management protocols (DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the , ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) A TCP/IP protocol used to send error and control messages. For example, a router uses ICMP to notify the sender that its destination node is not available. , SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. ). They can then generate pie charts, bar graphs and fever graphs showing traffic by types -- so the CIO can readily see how much of the pipe is consumed by mission-critical traffic versus routine network maintenance or even recreational network use. This feature was much requested by global network managers, since it gives them a quick and easy way to explain global network issues.

-- Create groups of users for shaping purposes.

Network managers can use this feature to set and enforce corporate bandwidth usage priorities by group. For instance, a network manager might create a group for call center employees and assign them the highest priority. During congested con·gest·ed

periods, call center users would still experience the required application response times as they deal with the company's most important assets -- its customers.

-- Report and post-automatically.

Network managers can now run WiseWan reports on a regular basis -- for instance, they can opt to run the ten most utilized reports every day at nine, noon and six -- and automatically post them to a Web site for easy sharing and comparing. This saves a significant amount of time for IT professionals in large organizations with dispersed teams in need of the crucial information WiseWan produces. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format. , Java applet A Java program that is downloaded from the server and run from the browser. The Java Virtual Machine built into the browser is interpreting the instructions. Contrast with Java application.  or Comma Delimited A record layout that separates data fields with a comma and usually surrounds character data with quotes, for example:

Since WiseWan reports are being utilized by a variety of employees within organizations, NetReality added a variety of report formats. The Java applet provides the ultimate flexibility: information originally captured in bar graph format can be manipulated and viewed by various recipients in whatever format they prefer-pie chart, line graph In graph theory, the line graph L(G) of an undirected graph G is a graph such that
  • each vertex of L(G) represents an edge of G; and
  • any two vertices of L(G
, etc.

Additional Features WiseWan 5.0 also includes:

-- Increased protocol support.

WiseWan has always supported more applications "out of the box" than any other bandwidth management product, and in 5.0 NetReality built further upon its leadership in this arena by supporting an additional 18 protocols including SAP Release 3, SOCKS, and Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol See PPTP.

(communications, protocol) Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol - (PPTP) A tunneling protocol for connecting Windows NT clients and servers over Remote Access Services (RAS). PPTP can be used to create a Virtual Private Network between computers running NT.
. Today, WiseWan supports nearly 500 applications

-- Support for higher speeds.

NetReality also announces three new high-speed models: the WiseWan 401 for a maximum line speed of 12 Mbps; 402 for serial lines with a maximum speed of 2x12 Mbps and WiseWan 601 for lines with a maximum speed of up to 52 Mbps.

Pricing, Availability

WiseWan 5.0 is available immediately from NetReality and its channel partners. Pricing starts at $3,995 and ranges upwards, depending upon quantity and speed supported.
