    The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the largest museums in the United States, and contains one of the largest permanent museum collections in the Americas.

    The four daughters of Bostonian Edward Darley Boit were painted while they were abroad, living in their Paris apartment. Sargent was friend of the family and part of the same social circle. Sargent invites us into the girls' world by cutting off the vase on the right, suggesting that we are actually in the room with them. Sargent's arrangement of the four girls is unconventional within this dark space. Each girl stands out as an individual with the strong contrast of her white pinafore against the dark shadows. The square format of the painting was also unusual. With their direct and puzzling puz·zle
