In Equity Office's Pacific Region, for example, many of its 60 nearly-new computers taken off-line are now hard at work in organizations ranging from a Boston inner-city school serving underprivileged kids to an independent care facility for senior citizens in Los Angeles.

At the 1400-resident senior living center in downtown Los Angeles, gone are long lines which residents formed to use the only computer (with slow Internet connection at that) available to them. Now the technologically savvy residents are connected -- better and faster -- with their families and friends.

Equity Office's Pacific Region has developed a system for identifying, evaluating and documenting computer equipment that can no longer be used in its state-of-the-art operations ... and determining charitable organizations that would most benefit from their gift.

Chicago-based Equity Office is currently attempting to expand this program as a best practice nationally.

Equity Office's Pacific Region also actively supports the YWCA in San Diego, California. Because of its combined donation with a local contractor, children residing at the YWCA now have a shade tent covering their rooftop playground.

And, in a separate initiative ... when Equity Office personnel in San Diego discovered that Northern Trust Bank intended to replace nearly 10,000 square feet of still new-looking carpet, it collaborated with the bank and several vendor partners to salvage the carpeting, which now adorns the YWCA's TV and reading rooms, counseling offices and other areas of the building.
