As early as c.200 B.C. there was a class of men in Rome accustomed to undertaking contracts involving public works and tax collecting; the tax collectors  Ray feared he would not live long enough to see his adoring granddaughter Olivia, aged three, grow up.

But now determined Ray is a shadow of his former self, losing five stone to get down to 15st 8lb, and his new granddaughter Millie, just seven weeks old, is the apple of his eye along with her big sister.

Ray, aged 62, of Colley Gate, Cradley, Halesowen, told how a routine blood test at Dudley's Russells Hall Hospital Russells Hall Hospital is an NHS-owned hospital located in Dudley, West Midlands, England.

It is situated on the A4101 main road which connects Dudley with Kingswinford, and lies narrowly within Dudley's boundaries just outside Brierley Hill.
 at the end of last year transformed his life and put everything into perspective.

"I already had blood pressure so I was being monitored for that anyway.

"But then the doctors told me they had discovered an irregular heart rhythm, leaving me at risk of a fatal heart attack, and I had also developed Type 2 or late onset diabetes, another potential killer.

"I could have dropped down dead at any time, I was an overweight, walking time bomb asking for trouble.

"I was secretary of the local branch of the Heart of England Food and Wine Society and that didn't help."

Ray, who is married to Jane, 61, joined Weight Watchers, which meets at the Wilson Hall, Colley Gate, every Tuesday, in February and has shed five stone in less than six months.

Ray's daily intake has gone down from 4,000 to 1,500 calories. Breakfast used to be rounds of toast and marmalade, lunch was sandwiches, and dinner was a bottle of wine, steak and chips, followed by cheese and biscuits and more drink.

Now Ray has fresh fruit for breakfast, soup for lunch and grilled fish and salad at dinner.
