SuperCede Java Edition, today announced that it has entered into a licensing agreement with TVObjects Corp., a leading provider of Internet development tools, to deliver a development environment that meets the needs of Visual Basic users migrating to Java, and to support the construction of new Windows-based Java applications A Java program that is run stand alone. The Java Virtual Machine in the client or server is interpreting the instructions. Contrast with Java applet. See servlet. .

The announcement was made at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center on the opening day of Software Development West, in a mid-day press conference held by Asymetrix to announce and introduce its line-up of strategic partners for Java development.

Two new SuperCede editions -- SuperCede Database Edition and SuperCede Java/ActiveX Edition -- will be launched in April 1997. Both products provide a form-centric, interactive environment that is very familiar to Visual Basic programmers. Each product will also feature a special edition of TVObjects' unique Visual Basic to Java translation technology, enabling developers to easily migrate existing Visual Basic applications to Java and the Internet.

"An enormous need for software solutions is arising as C++ and Visual Basic developers move onto the Internet with Java and a vast number of Visual Basic users are embracing Java development," noted Asymetrix's Shabbir Dahod, vice president and general manager of development tools.

"When it was introduced, Visual Basic was like a sleek gazelle gazelle, name for the many species of delicate, graceful antelopes of the genus Gazella, inhabiting arid, open country. Most gazelles are found only in Africa, but several species range over N Africa and SW Asia; the Persian, or goitered, gazelle (  in the Windows environment (1) (upper case "W") Refers to computers running under a Microsoft Windows operating system.

(2) (lower case "w") Also called a "windowing environment," it refers to any software that provides multiple windows on screen such as Windows, Mac, Motif and X Window.
. Now, with the emergence of the Internet and Intranets, Visual Basic resembles a dinosaur dinosaur (dī`nəsôr) [Gr., = terrible lizard], extinct land reptile of the Mesozoic era. The dinosaurs, which were egg-laying animals, ranged in length from 2 1-2 ft (91 cm) to about 127 ft (39 m). ," said Dahod. "Applet Designer enables Visual Basic developers to create Java applications without having to learn complex coding, by using their existing VB skills. By combining our interactive Java development environment with TVObjects' demonstrated translation technology, we are confident that we can provide the best in Java environments for the Visual Basic programmer."

"SuperCede is the fastest Java RAD (1) (Rapid Application Development) Developing systems incrementally and delivering working pieces every three to four months, rather than waiting until the entire project is programmed before implementing it.  development environment today," commented Andy Goren, president of TVObjects. "Given Applet Designer functionality, SuperCede provides an instant gateway to Java for the Visual Basic community-filling a need which no other vendors are addressing. By partnering with Asymetrix, we can create a vehicle for delivering sophisticated Java applications for Windows programmers."

Asymetrix, the only software developer that supports the use of ActiveX with Java in a visual environment, recently launched the first in its series of SuperCede products offering an interactive form-centric environment, generation of native Intel executables and seamless C++ DLL (1) See data link layer.

(2) (Dynamic Link Library) An executable program module in Windows that performs one or more functions at runtime. DLLs are not launched by the user; they are called for by an executable program or by other DLLs.
interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other. .

SuperCede Java Edition began shipping in January 1997, and has an approximate street price of $99. To date, more than 30,000 free trial versions of SuperCede Java Edition have been downloaded from http://www.asymetrix.com

TV Objects will ship Applet Designer Enterprise for SuperCede later this month, a new release that constructs a light framework to glue the multiple forms, modules, and classes from a VB application and construct Java applications and applets. The upgrade to Applet Designer Enterprise for SuperCede will be available for $497 directly from TV Objects or from http://www.tvobjects.com
