Asymetrix Announces InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition; InfoAssistant Eases Deployment and Administration of Data on the Internet.

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1996--Asymetrix today announced InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition, making available for the first time a decision support product that eases the deployment and administration of data on the Internet Internet

Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the
.

Working in conjunction with InfoAssistant, Asymetrix's end user decision support tool suite, the new Enterprise Server Edition provides the easiest, most cost-effective, most secure way to deploy and manage data accessed through private or public Internet networks.

Utilizing Internet enhancements to the InfoAssistant client solution, also announced today, Asymetrix makes it easy to deploy databases for access over the Internet and reduces the cost of supporting database access by eliminating the need for multiple client-side ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  drivers. Also included in the new Enterprise Server Edition are tools that allow administrators to provide transparent access to the database through a tailored FactBase, a business-oriented view of the database, as well as tools for monitoring and troubleshooting Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving. It is the systematic search for the source of a problem so that it can be solved. Troubleshooting is often a process of elimination - eliminating potential causes of a problem.  network connections.

"With the Enterprise Server Edition you can take your data to the `net in minutes, improving access to corporate information while maintaining security," said Bruce Linn linn

, vice president and general manager of client/server Tools for Asymetrix. "But the Internet is not just about global access. It also means making it easy to publish data. That's why InfoAssistant administrators can make any database anywhere in the world accessible without the need to purchase and install unique database drivers for each client."

In a related announcement today, Asymetrix has integrated the DataRamp Internet connectivity technology from Working Set, Inc., with InfoAssistant's Enterprise Server Edition administration and decision support tools.

InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition

InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition, consists of two key elements: Connection Server to easily deploy various ODBC data sources for access by any Internet-based InfoAssistant client; and FactBuilder, a decision support administration tool that extracts and tailors a business-oriented dictionary of the database for easy end user query. InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition, also includes a single copy of the InfoAssistant client for use by administrators as well as tools for monitoring and troubleshooting server connections.

Connection Server simplifies the deployment of databases for access over TCP (1) (Transmission Control Protocol) The reliable transport protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP ensures that all data arrive accurately and 100% intact at the other end.  networks by publishing any ODBC data sources to which the server's account has access. Because each InfoAssistant client comes with the necessary driver to connect to the Connection Server, users need only specify the Internet address There are two kinds of addresses that are widely used on the Internet. One is a person's e-mail address, and the other is the address of a Web site, which is known as a URL. Following is an explanation of Internet e-mail addresses only. For more on URLs, see URL and Internet domain name.  and data source desired. From that point on, access to the database is transparent, as if the data source was local.

Applications include business-to-business publishing of database information, distribution of sales data and analysis to regional offices, and business intelligence applications accessing live corporate data from mobile computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings  platforms.

The Enterprise Server Edition includes comprehensive tools that enable administrators to ensure the performance and availability of the decision support server. The InfoAssistant client's connection administrator has a single test button that reports which of the seven components between your application and the server's data source is failing.

The Enterprise Server Edition also includes a Connection Monitor that allows administrators to view, tune, and control client access to data sources. The Monitor lists all clients connected to a server with details describing client URL URL

, data sources accessed, and network and database statistics.

Enterprise Server Edition also includes the FactBuilder to extract a conceptual, business-oriented dictionary, called a FactBase, from any existing database. Administrators can enhance the data dictionary A database about data and databases. It holds the name, type, range of values, source, and authorization for access for each data element in the organization's files and databases.  in minutes to make the database simpler to understand and browse (1) To view the contents of a file or a group of files. Browser programs generally let you view data by scrolling through the documents or databases. In a database program, the browse mode often lets you edit the data. See Web browser.  by end users.

The FactBase allows users to browse the database through InfoAssistant's intuitive point-and-click interface that presents the data as business-oriented objects and their relationships in simple English Simple English usually refers to a simplified form of English such as:

terms, such as "Employee earns a Salary," or "Customer is located in a Region." Once the FactBase is created, users need only open it in InfoAssistant to gain easy, transparent access to the database.

InfoAssistant, Enterprise Server Edition, also includes a single copy of InfoAssistant, for administrator creation of custom decision support catalogs for end users, providing standard queries, analysis, reports, graphs, and forms. Administrators can easily set up the end user's environment for either ad hoc For this purpose.
