The emergency escape lighting system contract is with KID-Systeme GmbH (KIDS), a subsidiary of Airbus based in Buxtehude, Germany. The value of the award will depend heavily on the A380's success in the aircraft market. Airbus has received 129 orders and commitments for the new aircraft. Deliveries to KIDS will begin in 2004. The contract calls for Astronics to develop a new and unique emergency lighting system for the A380, which will meet tight design requirements for weight, reliability, power consumption and lighting performance. The system is based on light emitting diode See LED. (LED) technology, which offers significant improvements over traditional lighting technologies. The system will include ceiling emergency lights, seat-mounted aisle flood lights, emergency door markers, and certain galley galley, long, narrow vessel widely used in ancient and medieval times, propelled principally by oars but also fitted with sails. Although many know us as a cockpit lighting supplier, we have successfully implemented our strategy to increase the content and value we provide for aircraft exteriors and cabins as well. And, as this win confirms, we are gaining more content on commercial transport aircraft, as well as military aircraft platforms." He went on to say, "Our success is driven by our flexibility in responding to customer needs and our creative use of technology, which helps customers build better, cost effective aircraft. Customers like KID Systeme are recognizing our expertise, and are offering us ever larger roles in the development of new aircraft. Over time, this will result in attractive opportunities for Astronics."
