construction, and navigation, astrolabes consist of a star-map constructed around a viewer. Until supplanted by other technology, including the sextant sextant, instrument for measuring the altitude of the sun or another celestial body; such measurements can then be used to determine the observer's geographical position or for other navigational, surveying, or astronomical applications.  in the early 18th century, they were used to determine where the sun and the stars would be on any day, at any time and latitude. Previous volumes catalogued 313 globes and 413 sundials in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich; but astrolabes are comparatively rare, and this volume, although representing one of the world's major collections, catalogues 53 instruments (23 European and 30 Eastern). Nine essays discuss various aspects of the history, construction, and use of the astrolabe astrolabe (ăs`trəlāb), instrument probably used originally for measuring the altitudes of heavenly bodies and for determining their positions and movements. , and the contents of the collection. Following is the catalogue, which thoroughly documents the instruments. The book measures 9.75x12".
