After showing only rare glimpses of their real breakbuilding skills in the earlier rounds, it came as no surprise the four-frame final was a tactical, low-scoring affair.

McHugh looked to have the edge in the opening drame when leading 62-35 with one red left.

However, it was Astley who potted the last red and black and all the colours in a 27 clearance to steal the frame 65-62.

McHugh went on to level the scores by taking the second 62-49.

With neither player yet to show any real form, or produce any frame-winning breaks, it was the more consistent Astley who went 2-1 in front after taking the third 69-35.

He rounded off the match a 3-1 winner by running away with the fourth 64-12.

While Astley was earning his place in the decider with a 3-1 semi-final defeat of South Tyneside's Graham Ablitt, McHugh ahd booked his place by registering the same winning scoreline over Jarrow cueman Paul Garvin.

While most players on the day were enjoying runs in the 20s, 30s and 40s, the only three breaks over the half-century mark came from McHugh and Garvin.

They both recorded 68s, while Astley rattled off an 84 to claim the highest break award.
