What is the difference between an asteroid and a meteor?

Emily Gipson, Age 8

Asteroids This is a list of numbered minor planets, nearly all of them asteroids, in sequential order.

As of late September 2007 there are 164,612 numbered minor planets, and many more not yet numbered. Most asteroids are ordinary and not particularly noteworthy.
are sometimes called minor planets. They are fairly small, rocky worlds. Like Earth and the other planets, asteroids move in orbits around the Sun. Most asteroids are in a "belt"--a group of orbiting paths that lie between Mars and Jupiter.

A meteor is a streak of light we see in the sky when a much smaller bit of rock enters Earth's atmosphere and burns from the heat of friction as it falls through the air.

Two other important terms are meteoroid meteoroid: see meteor.  and meteorite meteorite, meteor that survives the intense heat of atmospheric friction and reaches the earth's surface. Because of the destructive effects of this friction, only the very largest meteors become meteorites. . A meteoroid is a bit of rock that could burn up to create a meteor--before it enters the atmosphere. Meteorites Meteorites
