Astellas Pharma, Theravance to Enter into Licensing Agreement for Investigational Antibiotic Telavancin.


Tokyo, Japan, Nov 9, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Japanese pharmaceutical giant Astellas Pharma and California biopharmaceutical company Theravance have jointly announced that the two companies have concluded a licensing agreement for telavancin, an investigational antibiotic discovered by Theravance. Under the agreement terms, the two companies will collaborate in developing and commercializing the agent worldwide except in Japan.

Astellas will make an upfront payment of $65 million, milestone payments of $156 million, and royalties on global sales to Theravance.

Telavancin, which is a lipoglycopeptide injectable antibiotic, is currently in phase 3 studies for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI) and Hospital-acquired pneumonia hospital-acquired pneumonia Nosocomial pneumonia Infectious disease Pulmonary infection acquired during a hospital stay which is often more severe than community-acquired pneumonia Risk factors Immune compromise, alcoholism, elderly, aspiration due to intubation.  (HAP HAP. In addition to the license to telavancin, Astellas also receives an option to develop and commercialize Theravance's proprietary antibiotic agent TD-1792 worldwide except in Japan. TD-1792 is a compound that combines the antibacterial antibacterial /an·ti·bac·te·ri·al/ (-bak-ter´e-al) destroying or suppressing growth or reproduction of bacteria; also, an agent that does this.
