Astellas Pharma, MerLion Pharmaceuticals Sign Joint Research Agreement for Naturally-derived Drug Candidate Search.


Tokyo, Japan, Oct 6, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Astellas Pharma Astellas Pharma Inc. (アステラス製薬株式会社   announced on October 4 that it has signed a joint research agreement with a Singapore company, MerLion Pharmaceuticals. Under the agreement terms, the two companies will collaborate in searching drug candidates from natural resources.

MarLion Pharmaceuticals will identify potential compounds in its natural resource library and exclusively develop, manufacture and sell new drugs using the identified compounds. Astellas Pharma will make milestone and royalty payments to MerLion Pharmaceuticals for the sales of the new drugs.

Founded in 2002, MerLion Pharmaceuticals is a research-oriented pharmaceutical company that has advanced fermentation technology and high-throughput screening High-throughput screening (HTS), is a method for scientific experimentation especially used in drug discovery and relevant to the fields of biology and chemistry.
