Astellas Pharma, Ferring Pharmaceuticals Sign Licensing Agreement for Degarelix, Prostate Cancer Agent.

) - Astellas Pharma Astellas Pharma Inc. (アステラス製薬株式会社   announced n January 31 that it has signed a licensing agreement with Ferring Pharmaceuticals on degarelix, Ferring's proprietary agent for treating prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. .

Under the agreement terms, Astellas Pharma will be licensed to exclusively develop and market the agent in Japan. Accordingly, Astellas will make upfront and milestone payments as well as royalties on product sales to Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

Degarelix, a gonadotropin gonadotropin /go·nado·tro·pin/ (-tro´pin) any hormone that stimulates the gonads, especially follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone.  releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist, helps suppress the testosterone secretion so that it can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.
