Assured Digital Introduces First Dynamic VPN Switching Products for Public and Private Networks.

LITTLETON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1998--

ADI product family provides new level of automation to remove

barriers to large scale deployment of secure VPNs

Assured Digital(tm), Inc. (ADI), the Dynamic VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  Switching Company, today introduced its ADI product family, a cost and performance breakthrough for secure virtual private network (VPN) deployment. ADI is the first to offer Dynamic VPN Switching, a new level of automation for dynamic network connectivity and security management. By combining networking and security technologies, ADI's products are the first to provide meshed connectivity for superior configuration flexibility with enhanced security at a new price point. The ADI product family establishes a new category of VPN solutions by offering tangible advantages over existing point-to-point, manually operated and cost-prohibitive VPN methods.

Setting it apart from VPN solutions in the market, ADI's Dynamic VPN Switching network devices embed intelligent routers that self-configure and automatically adapt to topology changes. This flexibility is offered with unmatched security at wire-speeds up to 100Mbps and with no performance degradation to existing networks. Dynamic VPN capability enables the creation of ad hoc For this purpose. Meaning "to this" in Latin, it refers to dealing with special situations as they occur rather than functions that are repeated on a regular basis. See ad hoc query and ad hoc mode.  communities of interest within an existing secure network on the fly. For example, if communications suddenly increase between two branch offices, ADI VPN switches will automatically select the optimum path based on connection policies and routing parameters. The switches reroute traffic from the central site to a direct link that efficiently uses bandwidth, reduces network traffic, and saves time and money.

"ADI's Dynamic VPN Switching technology is designed with new automation features to make the network manager's job easier. Their affordable VPN solution routes traffic over a site-to-site mesh of VPNs in the same manner as routed networks," said Michael Howard

Benefits for Corporate Users and Service Providers

Dynamic VPN Switching is the solution for corporate and service provider network managers and CIOs seeking a more deployable and manageable VPN solution. Within enterprises and partner extranets, business users can communicate securely using VPNs from headquarters, branch offices, or remote dial-up connections.

Carriers and ISPs can offer their Internet customers differentiated services Offerings that can be classified by type, or quality, of service. For example, a differentiated services network could prioritize real time traffic for a higher fee.  with wire-speed encryption and enhanced security. ADI makes VPN services easier to administer. New partnernet connections can be added simply and flexibly. Service providers can leverage ADI's dynamic routing The ability for a router to forward data via a different route based on the current conditions of the communications circuits. For example, it can adjust for overloaded traffic or failing lines and is much more flexible than static routing, which uses a fixed forwarding path.  capabilities to augment their own and their customer's bandwidth resources.

Automated VPN Installation and Operations

At the heart of the automated operations of Dynamic VPN Switching is ADI's hardware/software-based AOStm (Automated Operation and Security) system which is built into each ADI device. AOS (Alternative Operator Services) Operator services provided by a third-party organization. See operator services.

1. AOS - /aws/ (East Coast), /ay-os/ (West Coast) A PDP-10 instruction that took any memory location and added 1 to it.
is fully standards-compliant. It supports IETFs IPSec ISAKMP/Oakley, PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) A protocol from Microsoft that is used to create a virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet. Remote users can access their corporate networks via any ISP that supports PPTP on its servers.  and x.509 certificates, and accommodates future network security standards. AOS embeds a unique cryptographic identity in each device, delivers policy-based authorization, secures policy distribution, maintains wire-speed encryption and protects both data and user messages from replay.

The integration of AOS in the ADI Management System (AMS AMS - Andrew Message System ) further automates VPN management. For example, when a new ADI device is deployed, the AMS automatically initializes, authenticates, configures and updates all the required network and security parameters to establish multiple VPN connections.

The ADI Product Family

The ADI product family is a comprehensive set of Dynamic VPN Switches for corporate or carrier networks.

--ADI-4500 is a remote access concentrator A remote access server that supports one or more T1/E1 lines, allowing multiple analog and ISDN calls to come in over one port from the telephone company. Remote access concentrators can handle much higher call densities than remote access servers.  switch or nodal Having to do with nodes. See node.

switch enabling Dynamic VPN Switching for corporate headquarters, branches and partnernets or for service carriers to provision automated VPN services. Running up to 100Mbps Ethernet wire speed encryption and 45Mbps integrated dynamic routing, the ADI-4500 can manage up to 3000 secure, dynamic VPN connections.

--ADI-2000 is an intelligent, plug and play, 10Mbps routing and encryption edge switch for cost-effective remote access, supporting multiple, fully secured and meshed VPNs. It integrates Dynamic VPN Switching, an 8-port Ethernet hub A device that all lines on an Ethernet segment are plugged into. 10Base-T and 100Base-T Ethernets are star networks and require a hub for operation. The earlier 10Base5 and 10Base2 Ethernets are bus networks, but are often wired into a star configuration using a central hub for improved  and high-speed WAN access (cable or ADSL See DSL.

--ADI-1000 is an intelligent, plug and play, 10Mbps routing and encryption edge switch for offices already connected to the wide area network.

--ADI-500 is a PCI-based server switch that extends AOStm and Dynamic VPN Switching to a server inside a corporate network. The ADI-500 secures users to the server and provides Dynamic VPN Switching to any set of users requiring access to confidential data.

--ADI-100 is Windows-95 compatible client software for remote access dial-up applications.
