Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board (NIFSAB) today praised the Chicago Fire Department The Chicago Fire Department, also known as the CFD, is the principal fire suppression, prevention, and rescue agency of Chicago, Illinois, under the jurisdiction of the mayor of Chicago.  and the City Council for passing an ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
requiring an approved automatic sprinkler system to be installed in every new and existing nightclub or restaurant with an occupancy of more than 100 persons which is located in whole or in part more than four feet below grade. Those existing applicable nightclubs and restaurants will have six months to install an approved automatic sprinkler system.

"Often in these types of occupancies there can be a large number of people in an unfamiliar environment. These occupancies are below grade so there are not direct exterior exits at grade level. Also, basement fires are typically difficult fires to fight. Therefore, it is felt that this new ordinance would be a reasonable way to improve the life safety in those affected occupancies said Deputy Fire Commissioner Kenneth L. Wideman.

"The passage of this ordinance confirms the importance of sprinkler as the front line defense against deadly fires," noted Tom Lia, NIFSAB's Executive Director. "We commend com·mend
