Associated Grocers Agrees to Purchase Six Alaska Safeway Stores.

, announced that it has agreed to purchase six (6) retail supermarkets in Alaska from Safeway Inc.: -0-

12001 Business Blvd., Eagle River
1800  E. Parks Hwy., (Cottonwood) Wasilla, and

The stores will be owned and operated by Northwest Retail Ventures under the `Alaska Marketplace' name, with strong produce, meat, natural foods and other service departments. The general manager of Northwest Retail Ventures is Moira Paddock, who was previously Vice President, Operations of Carr's.

Northwest Retail Ventures is a new company that is owned by Associated Grocers Associated Grocers is a retailers' cooperative that distributes full lines of groceries and general merchandise. Originally founded in 1934, it also provides retail services to independent groceries in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam. , Bristol Bay Native Corporation Bristol Bay Native Corporation, or BBNC, is one of thirteen Alaska Native Regional Corporations created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA) in settlement of aboriginal land claims.  and a number of independent grocery retailers who are members of Associated Grocers.

"We have been servicing several Alaska retailers for a number of years. We are pleased to have this opportunity to grow our presence in the state," said Don Benson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "The change-over will begin on October 15th. We will convert one store per day, and expect to have all stores completed by October 22nd," stated Don Benson.

Employees at the divested stores can either exercise their seniority to remain at Safeway/Carr's or choose to go with the new company.
