ETFs are passively managed baskets of securities, tracking a wide variety of sector-specific, country-specific, and broad-market equity indexes, that are traded as individual securities on a national exchange. ETFs can offer investors several advantages not typically associated with other investment vehicles. For taxable investors, ETFs offer a better ability to manage tax liability than traditional mutual funds, because of the unique way in which the funds' internal transactions are handled that provides each investor with their own individual cost basis in the underlying portfolio. This minimizes the potential for taxable gains distributions. In addition, ETFs are considerably less expensive than the majority of comparable index mutual funds. Expense ratios typically range from 0.09% for domestic offerings to 0.99% for international offerings, depending on the issuer.
