Asset Management Technologies Announces InSight, the Next Generation Automated Vehicle Location System.

CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1997--Asset Management Technologies today announced the limited release of InSight(TM) for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , an advanced Automatic Vehicle Location See mobile positioning.  (AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) See mobile positioning. ) solution that uses advanced satellite and terrestrial wireless communications wireless communications

System using radio-frequency, infrared, microwave, or other types of electromagnetic or acoustic waves in place of wires, cables, or fibre optics to transmit signals or data.
technology to locate, track, monitor and communicate with vehicles virtually anywhere in the world.

InSight is the next generation in Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) software. Using InSight, fleet operators can:

-- Increase truck availability and reduce wasted time

-- Reduce losses from theft and hijacking hijacking

Crime of seizing possession or control of a vehicle from another by force or threat of force. Although by the late 20th century hijacking most frequently involved the seizure of an airplane and its forcible diversion to destinations chosen by the air pirates, when

-- Improve driver safety and security

-- Improve customer satisfaction

-- Increase operational efficiency

-- Establish real-time communications between the home office and the driver

"With this release, customers can be the first to get their hands on the latest technology," said Paul McNamara, AMT's President. "InSight represents a significant leap forward in AVL systems. It is truly an open system, where customers can integrate location and other vehicle data with their other logistics systems. Using InSight, fleet operators can meet today's challenges head-on and become more competitive and more profitable. Anyone who operates fleets of vehicles will benefit from this remarkable technology.

"For fleet operators, small changes can often mean big results", McNamara continued. "For example, in the motor freight industry an increase in vehicle utilization of just two percent coupled with a decrease in per vehicle operating cost of one percent will result in an astonishing a·ston·ish

30% increase in per vehicle profits. InSight has been developed to help fleet operators achieve those kind of bottom line results."

InSight offers unprecedented power and flexibility including these key features:

Open In-Vehicle-Computing Platform. InSight is compatible with the Symbol Mobile Gateway (SMG SMG - Screen Management Guidelines. A VMS package of run-time library routines providing windows on DEC VT100 terminals. ) from Symbol Technologies. This "open systems" computer is PC compatible and provides a wireless extension to an enterprise network, extending mission critical technology to mobile assets. Easily installed in truck cabs and cars, the SMG enables in-vehicle connectivity and communications capability to gather, prepare, send, and receive data anywhere, anytime.

Powerful Host Application. The InSight host application runs under Microsoft's NT 4.0 operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . It is an advanced 32 bit multithreaded multithreaded - multithreading  application utilizing the familiar Windows interface.

Usability. InSight provides an easy to use operator console. Its intuitive user interface is easy to learn and requires little training.

Multi-Protocol Support. InSight supports a variety of RF networks including CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19. , GSM, RAM/Mobitex, ARDIS/DataTAC, CSC (circuit switched cellular), and satellite.

Route Management. The host application incorporates a powerful set of utilities that enable the host to monitor the vehicle's actual route against a pre-planned route or against a geographical region. If the vehicle deviates from the planned route or wanders outside of a predefined region, an alarm is issued.

Seamless Integration with Other Applications. InSight was designed to inter-operate with other applications. Host data is stored in the industry standard ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  compliant database structure. This means that data can be easily imported and exported to and from other ODBC compliant applications.

Highly Scalable Architecture. InSight has been designed to grow with the user's needs. The systems can be configured using a single workstation to manage smaller fleets. The system can also be configured using dedicated communications servers, data servers and monitoring workstations to handle fleets of any size.

Advanced Alarm Management. InSight presents alarms and events in an organized, well-managed way. Operators are prompted when an event occurs and guided through a systematic response procedure. This useful feature allows the user's personnel to be doing other things while the InSight software monitors the user's fleet.
