Her students have won numerous awards in state, national and international competitions. She is well known to both CFMTA CFMTA Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations CFMTA Central Florida Music Teachers Association, Inc and MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) members. This lively session focused on assessment in the studio, sharing many wonderful ideas about how to develop critical listening skills of young pianists. Drawing upon her wealth of knowledge and experience, the presentation highlighted different ways in which teachers can help guide their students, not only during the lessons but with instructions and direction for practicing during the week. Using many musical examples, insightful and inspiring suggestions were given for creative teaching and performing including the following topics: Developing a musical technique that emphasizes the sound, the look and the feel, using rote exercises and examples from Burgmuller, Czerny & Hanon: Piano Studies Selected for Technique and Musicality edited by Clarfield. Building listening skills in upper elementary repertoire, with examples drawn from Alfred Premiere Piano Course Performance 1B and Faber Piano Adventures Performance 2A. Creating a critical musical/technical vocabulary for your students, focusing on the need to always mention what is already good, while finding a way to criticize using positive language. Assessment during the lesson, high-lighting the help students need to understand the correct sound, character and style before they learn the piece, drawing on examples from Keys to Stylistic Mastery. The importance of training students to critique their own playing during the lesson, and of involving the parents was also stressed.
