Acknowledging objections regarding the collection and use of data related to race, ethnicity, and gender in health research, Loue (Case Western Reserve U.) asserts the necessity of collecting such data and offers this work as an investigation into the complicated operational, ethical, and other issues underlying such research categories and their use. She first discusses the foundations upon which the conceptual categories of race, ethnicity, and gender rest and considers the ethical and methodological issues raised by this discussion. She then reviews definitions found in the literature and provides critical commentary on examples of research employing the three categories and their conclusions. Finally, she summarizes the range of measures that are currently used to assess race, ethnicity, and gender in the health research field.
