Assam's Kaziranga National Park a contender in Seven Wonders of Nature list.

Kaziranga (Assam,India), Jan.18 (ANI): The grazing heaven for the one horned Rhino, Kaziranga National Park Coordinates:  city Kaziranga National Park (Assamese: কাজিৰঙা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয়  in Assam, is on its way to become one among the new Seven Wonders of Nature.

The Sundarbans forest, the Ganges and Pangong Lake are the other three entries from India which would compete with 257 other spectacular places.

Two hundred and sixty one nominees from 222 countries include some of the most famous mountain peaks, lakes such as the Great Barrier Reef Great Barrier Reef, largest complex of coral reef in the world, c.1,250 mi (2,000 km) long, in the Coral Sea, forming a natural breakwater for the coast of Queensland, NE Australia.  and Niagara Fall, Great Canyon and the Mount Everest.

Rockybul Hussain, Minister of Forest and Environment, said that they were happy with nomination of Kaziranga National Park for the new seven Wonders of Nature.

"We are happy that Kaziranga has been included and we want to thank the forest department and the ground staff that has made this possible," said Rockybul Hussain, Minister of Forest and Environment.

The Forest Department is undoubtedly enthusiastic over the selection of the park as it means more recognition to the park and its dwellers, the people involved with the park and overall to the state of Assam.

"Kaziranga is certainly a wonder, whether it is voted or not. There are certain procedures for the selection. Whatever is the procedure, it does not matter. We can see the endangered species any time here in the park," said Dr Anwaruddin Chowdhury, an animal activist.

The Park is a sanctuary for more than half of the world's one-horned rhinoceros rhinoceros, massive hoofed mammal of Africa, India, and SE Asia, characterized by a snout with one or two horns. The rhinoceros family, along with the horse and tapir families, forms the order of odd-toed hoofed mammals.  population. Elephants, rhinos, wild buffaloes, gaurs, tigers, swamp deer, sambar deer are some of the other animals in the park.

Originally established as a game reserve in 1908, which included specific portions of Assam's Sibsagar district, Kaziranga was declared a sanctuary in 1940 to counter excessive poaching.

In 1974, the Indian Government declared it as a protected site. It covers an area of 430-sq-kms making an ideal habitat for the Indian one-horned Rhino.

Kaziranga also has a commendable population of birds. One can find huge flocks of pelicans, rose-ringed parakeets apart from crested serpent eagles, grey-headed fishing eagles, red jungle fowl Noun 1. red jungle fowl - a jungle fowl of southeastern Asia that is considered ancestral to the domestic fowl
