Approximately 600 students across the state took the written portion of the qualifying test in September. The test was sponsored by the Massachusetts Automotive Dealers Association and continues this month.

Angus Rhodenhamel of Berlin and Derek Russell Derek Russelll (born June 22, 1969 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is a former American football wide receiver who played college football at the University of Arkansas, and the seven seasons in the NFL.  of Hudson, both seniors, and Paul Blanchard and James Anable, both juniors from Westboro, placed high enough to move on to the next level. The seniors will compete as a team to diagnose a condition in a vehicle and repair it, and will be judged for speed and accuracy. The juniors will work individually on specific automotive tasks.

The winners in each category will go to the national event at the New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Auto Show in the spring. Even second- and third-place winners could win prizes, tools and scholarships.

"This is a tremendous way to showcase our students' talents, but the pressure gets pretty intense. Once you close the hood on the vehicle, that's it. The students have to remember that it's both speed and accuracy that count, and do a mental checklist before closing that hood. I remember one year when the team finished minutes before everyone else, but had forgotten to replace one screw. They lost," said Paul Airoldi, head automotive technology instructor at Assabet.

A few years ago, Mr. Airoldi's team did bring home the national medal - something, he said, he'd like to see again.
