These applications enable engineers to perform custom calculations, to apply reference recipes to control semi-continuous processes and to track material movements through a complex continuous or semi-continuous operation.

The applications further enhance the value of InfoPlus.21, which is the most advanced process information server and historian available to the manufacturing industries manufacturing industries nplindustrias fpl manufactureras

, operation and management of process plants and supply chains.

InfoPlus.21 integrates real-time operating data with historical information to present a unified view of plant operations. It also provides the platform for implementing specific applications, including real-time process monitoring and trouble-shooting, and batch information management.

"AspenTech designed InfoPlus.21 to act as the foundation for a wide range of applications that draw on both real-time and historic data on plant operations," said Brian Harkins, vice president, information management products, Aspen Technology, Inc. "InfoPlus.21 drives daily plant operations at more than 500 sites worldwide in each of the process industries. To support these customers, AspenTech is working to develop specialized applications, such as Aspen Calc(tm), Aspen Process Recipe(tm) and Aspen Genealogy(tm), that solve the specific requirements various industries have for gathering and using process information."

Aspen Calc

Engineers constantly perform calculations that enable them to gauge the efficiency, safety and environmental compliance of a plant, as well as whether it is on track to meet production goals. Aspen Calc draws on plant information in InfoPlus.21 to enable users to define calculations, then manage and execute these process calculations, as well as custom algorithms and user-defined programs, in a Windows environment (1) (upper case "W") Refers to computers running under a Microsoft Windows operating system.

(2) (lower case "w") Also called a "windowing environment," it refers to any software that provides multiple windows on screen such as Windows, Mac, Motif and X Window.
. Aspen Calc supports specific features for engineering calculations, such as engineering unit conversions and propagating value qualities. This advanced engineering functionality makes it possible to use these calculations for on-line applications. Aspen Calc is a perfect complement to existing off-line calculation support using Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world.

Latest version: Excel 97, as of 1997-01-14.

Aspen Process Recipe

Recipes are a crucial element of many manufacturing processes, which are well-suited to S88-styled recipes implemented in Sequencia's OpenBatch(tm). However, the nature of recipes in semi-continuous processes, including those found in the pulp and paper and polymers industries, differs significantly. Semi-continuous processes differ in that the recipe complexity is more a factor of the number of setpoints and limits and products instead of the sequencing complexity found in batch processes. Aspen Process Recipe addresses the unique requirements of semi-continuous processes, including support for recipes that vary from one product run to the next. In addition, Aspen Process Recipe enforces change controls on recipes to aid in ISO (1) See ISO speed.

 compliance.

Aspen Genealogy

Aspen Genealogy makes tracking material movements through semi-continuous and batch manufacturing processes practical and time efficient. Engineers working with semi-continuous processes or with continuous process segments can spend hours or even days evaluating paper records to determine the relationships between raw materials, equipment and finished product lots. Based on historical process data from InfoPlus.21, Aspen Genealogy models the process to determine these relationships on-line, then makes this information easy to navigate so engineers better understand the process and to aid in troubleshooting.

"Our customers are increasingly interested in specialized applications that meet their specific process needs," continued Harkins. "With software growing ever more costly to develop, and companies downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

(2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system.

(jargon) downsizing
and outsourcing, they can no longer afford to develop custom solutions. These three new products are designed to help our customers be more productive by providing a consistent work process approach in both their office solutions and manufacturing applications. Our adherence to Microsoft standards has made this possible."
