Ask the P&Rxpert.

Dear P&Rxpert:

Due to declining use, we are looking at converting two of our racquetball racquetball, sport played indoors by two or four players, combining elements of court handball and such racket games as squash racquets. It is played on a standard handball court 40 ft (12.2 m) long, 20 ft (6.  courts into a rock-climbing wall and a meeting/party room. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions regarding this type of conversion?

Dear Mary:

Our youth center had two existing racquetball courts, neither of which experienced overwhelming attention. We joined forces with the Juneau (Alaska) Rotary Club to install a climbing wall A climbing wall is an artificially constructed wall with grips for hands and feet, used for climbing. Some are brick or wooden constructions, but on most modern walls, the material used is a thick multiplex board with holes drilled into it. .

The project ended up costing about $9,000. It took a year to actually get everything lined up and running. The wall only took about a week to build; it was the paperwork that took so long to get in order.

We joined the Outdoor Recreation Coalition of America and purchased $3,000 worth of supplemental insurance. From ORCA Orca - Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, 1986. Similar to Modula-2, but with support for distributed programming using shared data objects, like Linda. A 'graph' data type removes the need for pointers. Version for the Amoeba OS, comes with Amoeba. , we were able to obtain specifications developed for climbing walls. Once we had those specs (SPECificationS) The details of the components built into a device. See specification. , everyone felt a lot better and things finally started to proceed.

We then secured a licensed architect, engineer, and bonded contractor. The architect designed the plans, and the engineer reviewed the specs, ensuring that proper materials were used.

The finished product consisted of two easy routes and two difficult ones. We certified about 1,500 different people the first year, mostly kids 19 and under, who climb for free. To date, there have been no accidents.
