A SIAN Dub Foundation are a band that changes lives. Not through the power of their own music but through the issues they raise.

 to change misinformed public opinion.

The clearest example of this was in the case of Saptal Ram. The Pakistani waiter defended himself against a racist attack and had ended up convicted on murder.

The band worked tirelessly to raise the profile of the case, playing benefit gigs and releasing the song Free Saptal Ram in 1997.

Through their hard work Saptal was released last year, although his case was not quashed.

Speaking in a break in rehearsals for their new tour, bassist Steve said: ``One of the band in particular was very involved with it and we did work hard to raise the profile of the case.

''It was something that we had been involved with for years so we kept plugging away at it and now thankfully he's been released.''

But to say that Asian Dub Foundation are a one issue group isn't true. As well as relentless touring they have also set up Asian Dub Foundation Education (ADFED), an association offering disadvantaged young people the opportunity to study music in East London East London, city (1991 pop. 240,474), Eastern Cape, SE South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. The city grew around a British military post founded in 1847. Its harbor was developed from 1886, and today it is a leading South African port. .

``The last thing we want to do is be like that Pop Idol This article is about the British television series. For general popular culture icons, see pop icon.

,'' Steve added. ``We don't want them to be like Will Young or anything like that.

``It's not about us being proud, we just wanted to do something for people who don't have the opportunity to make music.

``Two of our MCs on our new album (Aktar and Spex) came from the association. So we know that it works.''

Aside from this they are still raising issues with their music. Their new album Enemy of the Enemy carries strong political themes throughout The first track on the LP, and the first single, is Fortress Europe. It looks at people fleeing their country due to war and persecution Persecution

``I have an article from The Observer on my wall that says that the reality is that Home Office figures show that immigrants actually raise the average working wage.

So what does the band feel of the current political climate?

``You may think that this is a worrying time but I see it as one of the first times I can remember when people have stepped out and said loud and clear that they don't want a war.

``Prime Minister Blair had better realise that it is the people that voted him into power and it will be us that will get him out.''

The band has also produced an alternative soundtrack to the cult film La Haine, a tale of racism in French inner city estates, seen as a modern classic by critics.

``We were invited to do this soundtrack, and when we were done the director Mathieu Kassovitz came in to listen to it.

``I have never been so nervous in my life. There was this guy who you respect so much. He is a bit of a hero.

``Well, he loved the new soundtrack so it is going on an alternative soundtrack on the DVD's 10th anniversary release.''

The band have a mixture of heavy dub style and dance beats which gives them a unique sound.

The group's new album was the first time that they worked with a producer, one of the pioneers of dub - Adrian Sherwood Adrian Sherwood (born 1958 in London) is an English record producer best known for his work with dub music as well as for remixing a number of popular acts such as Coldcut, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, Pop Will Eat Itself, Sinéad O'Connor, and Skinny Puppy. .

``Working with Adrian was great, he took some of the songs and placed a really strong dub track over the top.

``He really changed some of the tracks and given them a lot heavier sound. He really brought something to us.

``Playing live is one of the biggest buzzes you can get so we are looking forward to playing again.
