SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 2001

In a year driven by headlines of anti-Asian sentiment against China, these awards demonstrate the ability of Asian American journalists to counter those criticisms by promoting fairness and accuracy in the way Asians are portrayed in the news media.

At an awards luncheon to be held Thursday, August 2, AAJA will present awards in two categories across several mediums: Unlimited Subject Matter and Asian American Issues, which are open to all Asian American professional journalists and AAJA members.

"Many of the judges expressed how impressed they were with this year's entries and how it was quite difficult in some cases to select a winner," said Neal Justin, board of governors and TV critic/trends editor for the Minneapolis Star Tribune For the Wyoming newspaper, see .

The Star Tribune (also Star trib or Strib, as it is often referred to) is the largest newspaper in the U.S.
, who oversaw this year's awards. "These winners are fine representatives of what all AAJA members have to offer. If there is one downside, it's that more of our members should have sent in entries. The more competition in the future, the more important these awards become."

AAJA is hosting its annual gathering, "Gateway to a Changing America" August 1-4, at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco. This year marks the 20th anniversary of AAJA, an organization dedicated to the achievements of Asian American journalists, promoting diversity within newsrooms through training initiatives and serving the needs of the Asian Pacific community. All proceeds from the convention support scholarships and other leadership programs within AAJA.

A panel from the Minneapolis chapter selected this year's national award winners. The judges included Pam Fine, managing editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune; executive editor Walker Lundy of the Pioneer Press; Vicki Cowler, managing editor, the Pioneer Press; the staff at WCCO radio; Michael Fibison, executive producer at Twincities.com; Loren Omoto, day news editor at Startribune.com; James Romenesko, MediaNews editor at the Poynter Institute The Poynter Institute is a school and resource for journalism located in St. Petersburg, Florida.
