AsiaInfo Wins China Unicom Contract, Worth Fifty Million Dollars; Project to Expand China Unicom's Successful VoIP Business.

AsiaInfo Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASIA), a leading provider of software products and infrastructure solutions for next generation network operators in China, announced today it has won a contract to expand China Unicom's Voice over IP (VoIP) network infrastructure. As the first contract of a total solution series, this agreement mainly comprises equipment purchase, which is valued at US$ 50 million.

This contract follows two previous AsiaInfo supported project for China Unicom: to initiate IP phone services in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and nine other cities in late 1999 and to expand its VoIP backbone to an additional 300 cities in China in March 2000. During the third project, AsiaInfo's Internet infrastrucutre solutions will further expand China Unicom's network capacity to over 7600 leased lines, tripling the current capacity to cover 328 cities in the country. The network offers caller ID IP phone services oriented to GSM and CDMA users and corporate users, as well as debit card IP phone services.

Established in 1994, China Unicom is the second-largest national public telecommunications operator in China, providing a wide array of services including long distance telephone services, local telephone services, mobile communications services, and data communications services. VoIP service represents an emerging business opportunity for the company. The new investment in expanding network infrastructure demonstrates that its VoIP business has been gaining momentum.
