Asia-Pacific Door Opens Wider For Bellcore.

MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 2, 1996--Bellcore and The Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, Republic of China, have signed a letter of intent to form a strategic alliance. "We are very pleased with the prospect of becoming a key player in the emergence of Taiwan as one of Asia-Pacifics most important high technology centers," said Robert Lucky, Bellcore's corporate vice president of applied research.

"The Asia-Pacific market will be overflowing with opportunity in the next few years and the proposed alliance would bring win-win results for both signing parties," said Dr. Shih-Chien Yang, senior vice minister of the MOEA.

The alliance would further technical cooperation between Bellcore and Taiwan's government and telecommunications industries. Bellcore has for some time been exchanging know-how and experience concerning video conferencing with the country's Industrial Technology Research Institute.

"The alliance's work would center on enhancing technical transfer and design capabilities to meet industry standards for price, delivery and quality," said Craig Vielguth,executive director of international markets for Bellcore.

Due to restrictions contained in the Modified Final Judgment, however, Bellcore would work on products that would be marketed only outside of the United States. Bellcore and the MOEA also would seek to jointly pursue business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific telecommunications market.
