supplier in Asia, provides complete supply chain solutions to its customers on a worldwide basis, including receiving, storing and shipping airfreight products. Symbol's Spectrum24 wireless network, along with Symbol laser bar-code scanners and vehicle-mounted and hand-held computers, are installed at the new Schenker Solution Logistic Center (SLC (Subscriber Loop Carrier) Lucent's designation for its digital loop carrier (DLC) products. "Symbol's Spectrum24 wireless LAN A local area network that transmits over the air typically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. It does not require line of sight between sender and receiver. Wireless base stations (access points) are wired to an Ethernet network and transmit a radio frequency over an area  system grants us the flexibility we need on the system side to handle our customer's requirements," said Wolfgang Herrmann, regional IT manager of Schenker International. "Efficiency-wise, we didn't need to install a new IT structure. The wireless system is fully integrated into SLC's fiber-optic network backbone. Schenker is able to operate a normal PC with a Spectrum24 wireless adapter A device that adds wireless connectivity to a computer or PDA. It is attached via a USB port, PC Card, memory card or is plugged into the PCI bus inside the computer. There are three types of wireless adapters: Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth.  card, or a laptop with a Spectrum24 PCMCIA card See PC Card. . The end result is that Schenker is able to provide a transparent warehouse system where our customers can have real-time information about their goods with minimum changes in our existing IT infrastructure."

In addition to the Spectrum24 wireless system, Schenker has also equipped its warehouse and forklifts with Symbol's vehicle-mount terminal VRC (Vertical Redundancy Check) An error checking method that generates and tests a parity bit for each byte of data that is moved or transmitted.

over the wireless LAN and stored in a database on an NT cluster. Since it is an on-line database-oriented system, Schenker's customers can view their stock in real-time via the Internet or with more security via Schenker's direct-access router system.

"Symbol has been very strong in supplying innovative solutions to the transportation and logistics industry, and we are very happy to be able to satisfy Schenker's requirement," said Peter Chan, Vice President of Symbol's Asia Pacific Division. "Schenker's success story again proves that Symbol's leading wireless LAN technology and excellent terminal and scanning products will help any customer realize their vision."
