Asia's Largest Air Freight Equipment Supplier Installs Logistics Solution Based On Symbol Spectrum24-R Wireless Technology.

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1998--Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), today announced that it has installed a total material management solution based on Symbol's Spectrum24(R) wireless local area network at Schenker International. The solution was installed through Symbol's distributor Mediatech Marketing of Singapore at Schenker's state-of-the-art logistics center in Singapore.

Schenker International, the top airfreight supplier in Asia, provides complete supply chain solutions to its customers on a worldwide basis, including receiving, storing and shipping airfreight products. Symbol's Spectrum24 wireless network, along with Symbol laser bar-code scanners and vehicle-mounted and hand-held computers, are installed at the new Schenker Solution Logistic Center (SLC) in Singapore to provide greater efficiency and automation, lowered costs and improved customer service for Schenker's customers.

"Efficiency-wise, we didn't need to install a new IT structure. The wireless system is fully integrated into SLC's fiber-optic network backbone. Schenker is able to operate a normal PC with a Spectrum24 wireless adapter card, or a laptop with a Spectrum24 PCMCIA card. The end result is that Schenker is able to provide a transparent warehouse system where our customers can have real-time information about their goods with minimum changes in our existing IT infrastructure."

In addition to the Spectrum24 wireless system, Schenker has also equipped its warehouse and forklifts with Symbol's vehicle-mount terminal VRC4040 and the LS3203 scanner.

All locations in its warehouse are clearly marked with bar codes and when a worker or a truck handles a loading media, the media and location are scanned. All the information is transported via TCP/IP over the wireless LAN and stored in a database on an NT cluster. Since it is an on-line database-oriented system, Schenker's customers can view their stock in real-time via the Internet or with more security via Schenker's direct-access router system.
