Ashton-Tate Corp. lays off 100 workers in cost-cutting move.


Torrance-based Ashton-Tate A software company founded in 1980 by Hal Lashlee and George Tate to market dBASE II, which was created by Wayne Ratliff. The company developed and acquired other products, including Framework, MultiMate and dBASE Mac.  Corp. laid off 100 of its 1,300 workers last week in a cost-cutting move officials said was not related to its pending merger with Borland (Borland Software Corporation, Austin, TX, www.borland.com) A software company founded as Borland International in 1983 by Philippe Kahn. The company is noted for its language and development products. It also popularized the desktop accessory for DOS PCs with its Sidekick program.  International Inc.

In July the two software publishers announced a $440 million union. In recent weeks both boards of directors have approved the deal. U.S. Justice Department officials have a tentative tentative,
