Ashes set for a return to free TV in shake-up; CHANNELS.

THE Ashes are to return to free TV under a shake-up of television sport to be unveiled today.

Home Ashes Tests are expected to be among them, along with international football qualifiers, Wimbledon tennis and golf's Open.

But the Epsom Derby The Derby Stakes, known colloquially as The Derby (pronounced "dar-bee" in SA/"der-bee" in countries using American English pronunciation) and internationally as the Epsom Derby, is considered one of the most prestigious flat thoroughbred horse races in the world.  and rugby league's Challenge Cup final are expected to be removed.

England Cricket Board bosses will be furious as they will lose an estimated pounds 120million from pay TV. The cash could have gone to grassroots cricket.

It was the first time a home series against the Aussies had not been available to viewers without a paying package.

Experts say cricket needs the exposure of terrestrial TV to attract new players.

A senior Government source confirmed he expects the Ashes to be the centrepiece of the report.

The report comes after former Culture, Media and Sports Secretary Andy Burnham asked for a review of free-to-air sport in December 2008.

He said: "The broadcast of big sports events gets young people inspired, the sale of TV rights helps fund grassroots sport.

"So we need to get the balance right."

New Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw and Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe will ultimately decide whether to accept the report's recommendations. Voice of the Mirror: Page 8
