After rain forced the players off the Swalec Stadium field at 4.10pm there was a two-hour delay before play resumed for six overs at 6.15pm.

"It is good we have been the first ground to use the floodlights and it is another milestone," said Glamorgan stadium director Simon Lee. "Both teams agreed to use floodlights as and when required at the pre-series meeting.

"We were consulted by the ECB See electronic code book.  to determine whether we were able to use floodlights."

Lee said the floodlights were turned on to aid the natural light until the scheduled end of play.

"They are put on to ensure play continues as long as it would under normal circumstances," he said.

, who gloved a catch down the leg-side. But Clarke's 83 and an unbeaten 54 from Marcus North meant Australia will resume the penultimate day on 479 for five, a lead of 44 runs.

This leaves Australia in the dominant position after their batsmen forced the English bowlers to toil, although the rain forecast today could hold them up.
