Ashdown warned on Blair links.


LIB DEM LIB DEM Liberal Democrat(s) (UK political party)  leader Paddy Ashdown Jeremy John Durham Ashdown, Baron Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon, GCMG, KBE, PC, (born 27 February1941), commonly known as Paddy Ashdown, is a British politician.  was warned yesterday the party would not be "bounced" into closer links with Labour.

And he warned that co-operation would not increase just because Ashdown said so.

The Gordon MP said his party had fundamental differences with the Government on economic policy, particularly Labour's refusal to contemplate tax changes to fund public services Public services is a term usually used to mean services provided by government to its citizens, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services. .

He said: "It clearly is a difficult road to follow when you're cooperating with a government while maintaining your own identity.

"There is no doubt at all that there are severe reservations in the party as to exactly how further we should go."

He added: "We have a leadership within the Liberal Democrats that has to decide on any particular issue if we will cooperate or not.

"So far we have not advanced it at all and it certainly will not be advanced entirely on Paddy Ashdown's say-so."
