Ashby won at 60; CHIP SHOTS: THE ANSWER.


YESTERDAY, we asked our readers if anybody knew of a club champion older than 53-year-old John Elwood, from the Wynyard club.

We were put right with a phone call first thing in the morning about Harry Ashby, now 63, who was 60 when he won the title for the second time at De Vere De Vere may mean:
  • Aubrey de Vere II (d. c. 1112) and his descendants the de Vere family, 20 of whom who held the title of Earl of Oxford in succession, until 1703
  • Cecil Valentine De Vere, chess player
 Slaley Hall Slaley Hall is a country house golf resort in Northumberland in North East England, which hosted The Great North Open between 1996 and 2002. It is surrounded by 1000 acres (4 km²) of Northumberland forest and moorland. , the host club for our Champion of Champions on September 6. Ashby was a serial club championship winner at his former club, Consett, who he represented when he won back-to-back English Amateur titles in 1972 and 1973.

A British Amateur semi-finalist, Ashby has been captain of both his clubs and played three years on the European Tour, both Ashby and Seve Ballesteros making their professional debuts in the 1974 Italian Open Italian Open may refer to:

  • The Italian Open golf tournament, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Telecom Italia Open.
. Ballesteros went on to five majors. Ashby, now retired and living in Shotley Bridge, says with self deprecating humour: "I went on to work in education!"
