On October 25th, 2002, Charon Asetoyer was honored with a "Bread and Roses Award" by the National People of Color Noun 1. people of color - a race with skin pigmentation different from the white race (especially Blacks)

 Environmental Justice Leadership Summit (NPCEJLS). Among eleven other women, Charon was awarded for her longstanding work for environmental justice in Native communities.

Charon was singled out as the founder and director of the Native American Community Board and the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center in Lake Andes, South Dakota Lake Andes is a city in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 819 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Charles Mix CountyGR6. , on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. Charon also serves on the boards of the Indigenous Women's Network and the Honor the Earth Founding
After meeting Winona LaDuke in 1991 Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers decided to hone their environmental commitment to the Indigenous community. They formed Honor The Earth in collaboration with Indigenous Environmental Network, Indigenous Women's Network and
 Campaign. In the past she has been on the boards of the National Minority AIDS Council, Center for Constitutional Rights, and the Center for Women Policy Studies, among many others. She was appointed by then President Bill Clinton to serve on the National Advisory Council for Health and Human Services Noun 1.
