, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1995--Ascom Timeplex, a major provider of enterprise network systems solutions, has been awarded a contract with PTT (1) (Postal, Telegraph & Telephone) The governmental agency responsible for combined postal, telegraph and telephone services in many European countries.

product victory in Europe, with Ascom Timeplex delivering part of a total network solution worth over $3 million. The SYNCHRONY platform will enable the department to centralize its network for the first time by providing integrated voice and data services in one location to serve 63 sites.

The SYNCHRONY product line is part of an overall product offering proposed by PTT Telecom in cooperation with Unisource, the telecom body consisting of PTT Telecom, Swiss Telecom, Swedish PTT and Telefonica of Spain. SYNCHRONY was chosen because it proved to be the best foundation to build a standardized, centralized system In telecommunications, a centralized system is one in which most communications are routed through one or more major central hubs. Such a system allows certain functions to be concentrated in the system's hubs, freeing up resources in the peripheral units.  for the various police departments.

By integrating voice, voice compression Same as speech compression.  and data traffic and offering the flexibility to make dynamic network configuration changes when required, the SYNCHRONY backbone network will help the department realize substantial cost savings. In addition, SYNCHRONY provides a pathway for future ATM usage.

By linking all of the police force's telephones and computers, the SYNCHRONY solution will benefit all members of the force. Regardless of location, officers will now be able to more readily access the critical information they need, thereby increasing their mobility and making them more effective and productive.

Howard Shaw, Ascom Timeplex general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, comments, "We are developing very strong links with both PTT Telecom and Unisource. We view our new contract with the Rotterdam Police as a step toward solidifying that relationship. The competition was tough for this contract, but with SYNCHRONY providing the voice and data integration services so desperately needed and PTT Telecom offering the breadth of experience and comprehensive support, we knew we were putting forward a quality solution."

The Rotterdam Police, who protect one of Europe's busiest seaports, will realize real time benefits from the network. A spokesman for the Rotterdam Police states, "The new communications network The transmission channels interconnecting all client and server stations as well as all supporting hardware and software.  enables our officers to immediately access crucial information. It will be a powerful weapon in our fight against crime."

About the Synchrony Product Line

The SYNCHRONY family of products integrates a range of technologies which allow the efficient networking of voice, video, LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and data traffic.

The family includes the ST-50 and ST-20 switching and transport devices which can handle both circuit switched traffic, such as video and voice, and switch frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  traffic, such as LAN and legacy data. In addition, the ST-1000 can terminate LAN traffic through integral router modules supporting Ethernet, Token Ring or FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  LANs. Access devices in the family include the IAN IAN Interactive Affiliate Network

(Integrated Access Node) which can combine LAN and legacy traffic from small branch locations; and the AD10 which provides cost-effective delivery of data and compressed voice traffic from remote office sites.

The SYNCHRONY family also offers two unique technologies to enhance the performance and provide the appropriate quality of service to different traffic types in integrated communications networks.

First, EXPRESS ROUTING architecture allows LAN and legacy traffic to share the same frame switched network, while assigning the necessary, priority to delay-sensitive SNA/legacy traffic. Second, Ascom Timeplex's unique EXPRESS SWITCHING architecture provides dynamic allocation of bandwidth between circuit and frame based traffic on a single link. Both of these technologies have a clearly defined migration path to ATM access and switching, which will be delivered in future SYNCHRONY product releases.
