, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1996--Ascom Timeplex today announced release 5.2 of its SYNCHRONY synchrony /syn·chro·ny/ (-krah-ne) the occurrence of two events simultaneously or with a fixed time interval between them.

and ST backbone and access switches, as well as release 2.0 of its EMS 200 network management system for the SYNCHRONY product line.

Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  Switching Enhancements Optimize Network Performance

Release 5.2 includes numerous enhancements to the SYNCHRONY products' Frame Relay switching capabilities. These include performance enhancements which increase Frame Relay throughput by over 100% across the switching backplane, expanded Digital Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs) allowing connection to up to 500 PVCs per interface, and multiple Local Access Points (LAPs).

The performance enhancements increase SYNCHRONY Frame Relay switching performance by over 100% thereby increasing the efficiency and cost effectiveness of these backbone switches.

The expanded Digital Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs), enable users to connect up to 500 Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

) per interface board (IRP See Interest rate parity line. ) with Frame Relay. The PVCs may be distributed in any proportion to any of the four ports on the IRP and in any kind of usage on any type of port. For instance, as many as 500 virtual trunks can be defined on a single gateway port.

While previous versions of the software supported a single port per Local Access Point (LAP), the SYNCHRONY Release 5.2 software version supports up to four LAPs, allowing priority of quality of service to be assigned to upper level protocol thus addressing the varied bandwidth needs of each. Additionally, the upgraded software supports RFC (Request For Comments) A document that describes the specifications for a recommended technology. Although the word "request" is in the title, if the specification is ratified, it becomes a standards document.  1315, the standard frame relay MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. .

Data Compression Offers Reduced Bandwidth Utilization

Release 5.2 provides data compression over WAN links for all network protocols supported by SYNCHRONY products. Compression begins at the network layer header (the Link Layer header is not compressed) and compression ratios vary from 2:1 to 5:1 and higher, depending on the nature of the files being transmitted. This translates to a reduction of WAN bandwidth requirements by 50% - 80% depending on traffic types. In applications where WAN bandwidth allocation is fixed, data transmission speeds increase by 100% - 400%.

DLSw Enhancements

Through the Data Link Switching See DLSw.  (DLSw) enhancements, preservation of dissimilar source/destination Service Access Points (SAPs) over a single DLSw connection, allows the support of multiple downstream controllers on the far end of the connection.

New Multi-Interface WAN Board

In addition to the software enhancements, Release 5.2 supports the new Multi-Interface WAN board for the ER and ST backbone products. The new MIW MIW Mine Warfare

board provides customers the flexibility when selecting their WAN interface, to quickly and easily make field changes to these interfaces. The MIW is a four-point module which uses field-installable WAN personality modules, to define the personality of each port independently of the other. The options include V.35 with V.54, V.28 with V.54, V.11 with V.54; and V.11 with X.21. This mix and match of the MIW provides the flexibility of choosing the appropriate WAN interface reusing the existing cabling for the company's customers when upgrading from older technologies. This means significant cost savings.

SYNCHRONY Element Management System (EMS) 200 2.0 Supports Internetworking Enhancements

The EMS 200 software upgrade enhances the EMS 200 map to visually display WAN DARA trunk connections, providing better visibility of BNP BNP B-type natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide Physiology A 32-residue peptide hormone produced predominantly in the ventricles, secreted in response to fluid overload–eg, CHF. See Atrial natriuretic peptide.  and IAN networks.

EMS 200 2.0 supports frame relay management, and provides sophisticated management of frame relay PVCs- the foundation of the patented Ascom Timeplex EXPRESS SWITCHING(TM) architecture. Automated discovery enables EMS to generate a topological display of frame relay devices within the network, simplifying problem resolution related to the interaction between logical and physical networks. The frame relay management application has been enhanced to support the multiple LAP capacity available in the 5.2 router software.

EMS 2.0 is also integrated with ChipCom ONdemand 3.2 for management of the ON-LINE intelligent hub product line, and supports Router MIB 5.0. In addition, the EMS provides support for the Ingres relational database, providing a single database for both applications, thereby lowering the cost of the system solution.
