users to take advantage of technologies such as Fast Ethernet.

NetDoubler will be bundled with the company's AsanteFAST 10/100 Adapter for PCI-based Macintosh computers. Designed for Apple Power Mac systems using Open Transport, NetDoubler allows increased file transfer speeds up to six times the current speed. The software is optimized for switched and Fast Ethernet networks, which until now could not be fully utilized in Apple environments.

"Fast Ethernet is a triple digit growth marketplace," said Trudy Barker, principal analyst at Dataquest. "It's very smart for Asante to allow users of Macintosh systems, who typically demand consistent, high-performance network throughput, to realize the benefits of technologies such as Fast Ethernet."

NetDoubler runs on any PCI-based Power Mac running System 7.5.2 or higher (e.g. 7200, 7500, 8500, or 9500) with Open Transport 1.0.8 or higher and is designed to work between two Apple clients or between a client and an AppleShare server. The software must be installed on both the source and destination systems, and requires 1MB of RAM on any client and 3MB of RAM on a server.

NetDoubler uses Open Transport and therefore is network protocol-independent. NetDoubler supports any AppleShare server on Macintosh client running Personal File Sharing Copying files from one computer to another. Currently available for PCI-based systems, NetDoubler will also support Asante's NuBus-based 10/100 adapter cards with the expected release of Open Transport 1.1 by Apple Computer later this quarter. For users who have already invested in 10/100 technology, NetDoubler also supports any PCI-based network adapter A printed circuit board that plugs into the bus of both user machines (clients) and servers in a local area network (LAN). Also commonly called a "network interface card" (NIC) or "LAN card," the network adapter transmits data onto the network and receives data from the network.  card.

"NetDoubler is designed to improve the performance of Open Transport Macintosh systems by providing up to a six-fold increase in network file transfer speeds," said Jay Cowan, product manager, Macintosh products, at Asante Technologies. "NetDoubler bundled with our PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

10/100 adapter allows users to take full advantage of Fast Ethernet's potential bandwidth. Our own preliminary tests have shown that a 20MB file that normally takes almost one minute to transfer in a Fast Ethernet network can take less than 10 seconds when using NetDoubler."

About AsanteFAST

Released in June 1995, the AsanteFAST 10/100 Adapter is a high-speed adapter card that connects PCI-based Macintosh and PC computers to both 10BASE-T Ethernet and 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet networks. The AsanteFAST card is the latest in Asante's extensive Fast Ethernet product line, which includes a manageable 100BASE-TX stackable hub, a 100BASE-TX/FX hub, an unmanaged Fast Ethernet hub, a 10/100 bridge and a Fast Ethernet network management module.

Pricing and Availability

NetDoubler will be available in February 1996 for $99 per client/server. The AsanteFAST 10/100 Adapter for PCI is priced at $239 list with NetDoubler software included free of charge.
