Asante and HELIOS Announce NetDoubler Acceleration in EtherShare; Offers Dramatically Improved Server Performance for Prepress and Publishing.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1997--Asante Technologies Inc., a leading supplier of Ethernet and Fast Ethernet networking products, and HELIOS Software GmbH, a leading supplier of UNIX-based high-performance server solutions, today jointly announced HELIOS will integrate Asante's NetDoubler network acceleration software into its new version of EtherShare.

HELIOS has announced the availability of NetDoubler for EtherShare as a free "test drive" server update off its Web site at www.helios.de . The test drive runs through May 1, 1997, after which future releases will integrate the NetDoubler server into EtherShare with prices starting at $3,900 for 20 users. HELIOS' customers with a software update agreement will receive the EtherShare NetDoubler server update and the new version of EtherShare at no cost as part of their software update agreement. The NetDoubler client remains an Asante product.

HELIOS EtherShare provides high-performance network services on UNIX/RISC-based machines and gives UNIX UNIX

. With the addition of NetDoubler, EtherShare becomes one of the fastest servers available today for prepress and publishing.

In real-world performance tests conducted by HELIOS, NetDoubler with EtherShare allows a single user to read and write files to a Sun Ultra server at speeds of up to five megabytes per second (unit) megabytes per second - (MBps, MB/s) Millions of bytes per second. A unit of data rate. 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes per second (not 1,048,576).  over Fast Ethernet. With six clients, the server provides up to 17 megabytes per second.

"Asante is pleased to be partnering with HELIOS to offer NetDoubler for EtherShare," said Jeff Lin, president of Asante. "HELIOS represents a formidable portion of the prepress and publishing market -- NetDoubler's primary target market -- so this is an important step in our efforts to provide our customers with total UNIX platform support."

"HELIOS is excited about providing state-of-the-art NetDoubler acceleration for EtherShare as a standard feature for all of the nine UNIX platforms it supports," said Helmut Tschermenjak, president of HELIOS.
