Asante Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ:ASNT) today announced an updated version of its IntraSwitch 62xx firmware which extends the capabilities of the existing Web based management application.

Included in this free upgrade is the ability for a network manager to use a Web-based interface to configure and manage VLANs. Most vendors' implementations are limited to arcane command line interface commands making VLAN configuration and management difficult and time consuming. Extending this capability to a user-friendly Web-based interface saves network managers time and headaches.

The 62xx series Ethernet switch features an Asante innovation that is unique to any Layer 2 switch. The system is capable of tracking the users attached to any given port identifying both the MAC and corresponding IP addresses attached to a particular node. This information is extremely useful to network managers when trying to troubleshoot network problems or locate users by allowing them to readily map a user IP address to the physical point of connection to the network. This unique ability is also available from the browser.

Other enhancements in this release include new network security and filtering functions typically only found on more expensive Layer 3 switches. Four advanced levels of security are available. Capabilities include:

New MAC Address Notification - the ability to notify the network manager when a new user connects to a port.

Trusted MAC Address Forwarding - the ability to both notify the network manager and lock out an unauthorized user trying to connect to a port.

Trusted MAC Address Forwarding with Port Lock - the ability to shut the port down completely when an untrusted user attempts to connect to a port.

Trusted MAC Address Forwarding with Intruder Lock - the ability to block and unauthorized user from gaining access to the network from any port on any Asante switch in the network.

Another feature unique to Asante 62xx series switches is the ability to set a port to filter any Layer 3 protocol keeping unwanted traffic from flooding segments of the network.

System configuration is made easier and overall performance enhanced by handling configuration file uploads and downloads in firmware. Using this new capability network managers can save time when configuring multiple switches by downloading new configuration files across the network. The new firmware includes support for the first 4 groups of Remote Monitoring (RMON), as well as a Web Alarm function for enhanced security.
