As thick as bricks...Byline: Will Batchelor MERSEYSIDE police Merseyside Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Merseyside in North West England. The force area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. At present the force has 4,466 police officers plus over 2,000 police staff. was criticised this week for going easy on racists within its own ranks. The force investigated misuse of its e-mail system and found a handful of offensive images in circulation. One showed a gorilla's head superimposed on a black woman's body, and claimed she was "Miss Africa". Another showed white eyes White Eyes (c.1730–November 1778), was a leader of the Delaware (Lenape) people in the Ohio Country during the era of the American Revolution. Sometimes known as George White Eyes, his given name was something like Koquethagechton on a black background, with the caption "Harlem by night". Several civilian and uniformed staff were disciplined, but the harshest punishment dished out was the docking of three days pay. The National Black Police Association described the punishments as "derisory". I agree - they should have been sacked. Quite apart from the racism, which is unquestionable, these people are clearly as thick as bricks. Who, other than an idiot, would find humour in the suggestion that black people are like apes or that you cannot see them in the dark? And who, other than a moron mo·ron n. A person of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational education. of the highest order would then think it a whizzo idea to forward the image to colleagues on a police computer system? If brains were dynamite, they wouldn't have enough to blow their helmets off. Merseyside police stresses the culprits are in a minority and that any large organisation would find similar problems. True, but the thought of even a few people so stupid being responsible for our safety is worrying. |
