Sweeney discovered a packet of letters 40 years after they were written to her mother at the end of WW II. Her father, Jack, was a pilot in the Navy, and at the end of the war, he met her mother in California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  just before he was stationed in Asia. Even though they only knew each other for several weeks, they wrote frequently and were married some months later, soon after Jack got back to the States in 1946. Sweeney never knew her father: his plane went down in the Atlantic when her mother was pregnant with her. The discovery of the letters helped Sweeney to become acquainted with him. He had a quick wit, he was loving and loyal, and he loved to fly.

Sweeney fills the reader in on the details of her parents' life together, and her mother's life after the death of her husband. There are a few b/w photographs and a copy of the wedding announcement. Basically, however, the small book is a series of letters written by Jack, from China, from Guam Guam (gwäm), Chamorro Guåhan, the largest, most populous, and southernmost of the Mariana Islands (see also Northern Mariana Islands, an unincorporated territory of the United States (2005 est. pop. , from Hawaii Hawaii, island, United States

. He frequently refers to his girlfriend's letters, so although we don't have the exchange between them, we have an idea of what is going on in her life as well.

Jack is charming, and his letters are breezy and fun, revealing his steadfastness stead·fast also sted·fast
