Artwork to help us get noticed; ESTATE'S NEW LOOK.

ARTWORK created with the help of local youngsters is helping put a Tyneside estate on the map.

Residents on the Abbotsford Road estate, Felling, in Gateshead, felt that since previous demolition works took place, the estate didn't stand out and went unnoticed by passers-by. But that has all changed thanks to a sculpture which can be seen by thousands of motorists using one of Tyneside's busiest roads, the Felling Bypass.

The piece was developed through The Gateshead Housing Company's sustainability fund, with the help of local residents, Brandling brand·ling

Brandling pupils attended an arts workshop and provided pictures of the types of things they would like to see included in the piece.

Kate McDougal, senior tenant liaison officer with the housing company, said: "Residents felt the entrance of the estate was quite hidden, but the new sculpture The New Sculpture refers to a movement in late-nineteenth century British sculpture.

After a protracted period of a stylized neoclassicism, sculpture in the last quarter of the century began to explore a greater degree of naturalism and wider range of subject matter.
 gives them a real sense of identity.

"There is a strong community feeling here and the artwork is the perfect finale to all of the home and estate improvements works completed in the area."
