Arts centre chiefs push for pounds 3m lift; BUSINESS PLAN: Council aims to manage taken-over Public as single project.

Byline: Chris Henwood

NEW bosses at a troubled Midland arts centre An art center or arts centre is distinct from an art gallery or art museum. An arts centre is a functional community centre with a specific remit to encourage arts practice and to provide facilities such as theatre space, gallery space, venues for musical performance,  are in the process of drawing up a business plan in the hope of securing a pounds 3million boost.

The pounds 63million Public venue, which opened two years late last June, was taken over completely by Sandwell Council in January and the authority is looking to manage the building as a single project.

A joint council and Sandwell Leisure Trust team has been established, charged with operating the building as a successful community and arts centre and regional and national events venue.

The council's lead is executive director for adult and community services, John Garrett For other persons named John Garrett, see John Garrett (disambiguation).

John Laurence Garrett (8 September 1931 – 11 September 2007) was a British management consultant and Labour Party politician.
.

The first priority was to review plans made under the previous organisation and present a business plan to secure the pounds 3 million offered to the council by Arts Council England Arts Council England was formed in 1994 when the Arts Council of Great Britain was divided into three separate bodies for England, Scotland and Wales. It is an Executive Agency of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.  when it withdrew its support for Public Gallery Ltd.

Mr Garrett said: "The Arts Council An arts council is a government or private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts mainly by funding local artists, awarding prizes, and organizing events at home and abroad.  has invested a lot in this project, as has the council, and we are very pleased they have put their faith in us to deliver the final stage.

"We are now finalising a new business plan for approval by the council which the Arts Council will take through their formal process in July. This building is a massive asset at the heart of West Bromwich which can deliver a wide-ranging programme of cultural and other events, support the delivery of education, training and enterprise, and which can provide a focus for the regeneration of West Bromwich.

"The new business plan will focus on maximising use of The Public by local people." Regular comedy and reggae nights and film screenings are being held and a community arts day will showcase work by local groups. The council has also seconded its head of libraries, Linda Saunders, as interim general manager..
