Gould managed Hammer's private art collection - heavy on Impressionists - and helped arrange for traveling exhibitions of the work. During all those years, Gould never put away his paint brushes, stealing time Stealing Time was a 2003 comedy/drama involving the uniting of four friends reuniting a year after high school, each of them now dealing with their own problems. "One of the greatest things about having the jobs I did with the Smithsonian and Hammer was that I could see firsthand all these paintings. Vermeers that never travel. Picassos. When we were traveling, we would go out of our way to find an excuse to stay in these world capitals a little while longer so we could see all the art." Gould left Hammer's employ in 1987 and returned to Lane County to paint; he's been working here as an artist ever since. He lives near Noti with his wife, writer Quinton Hallett. An exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints from throughout Gould's career opens Friday at the Jacobs Gallery. Curated by Springfield artist Craig Spilman, the exhibit reaches back over a period of 40 years. That's not quite a retrospective for an artist as prolific as he has been, Gould said. "That's a mini-retrospective, for me," he said. "Twenty-one works is just enough to get warmed up, because I have so many things." By contrast, he said, a 1990 solo show of his work at the Coos Art Museum Coos Art Museum is a museum operating on the southern coast of Oregon, USA, since 1950. "I learned so much from McCosh as an undergraduate," Gould said. "I just hung on his every word. He was a tremendous teacher, as were Jack Wilkinson Jack Lloyd Wilkinson (born September 12, 1985 in Beverley, England) is an English footballer. But while those teachers are associated with Northwest landscape, Gould's work is grounded in a personal geography. His is a landscape of mind and imagination, where elements of surrealism work within tightly controlled color and composition. Gould said that, just like McCosh a generation ago, some people don't "get" his paintings. He suggested they leave their expectations at the gallery door. "It is the kind of work that people have to bring their imaginations to see. It doesn't really say, `I am a landscape or a figure painting or a still life.' `But when they do use their imagination, or they are not afraid to use their imagination, then good things tend to happen.'
