Artists will make a motel their venue.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Performers often stay in motels but seldom, if ever, do a show there - at least, not for the public.

Yet, that is precisely what the Creative Material Group will do with its ``Motelhaus#3'' event on Saturday.

Eight artists will check into the Timbers Motel - at 1015 Pearl St. in downtown Eugene - and will, as director-producer Leon Johnson

puts it, "transform their rooms into interactive spectacles, performances and installations as they respond to themes of place, transience, memory, home and secrecy."

The event is a follow-up to the group's 1997 "Motelhaus: One Night Stand" event. Beginning at 7 p.m., the public will be invited to drift from room to room to investigate the goings on.

The event is free, and Johnson says it will last as long as "people are there to look."

While the evening will be theatrical, it won't be theater in the conventional sense. Instead, patrons will move from room to room - one for each artist involved - to view separate and unique work.

"Some will be using video projections," Johnson says. `Some will feature live performance. Some will feature sound. Some will feature digital interactive work.
