Soprano Cheryl Hickman recently returned to Calgary Opera The Calgary Opera is a Canadian professional opera company in Calgary, Alberta, originally known as the Southern Alberta Opera Association. It performs in the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, accompanied by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Opera Chorus. , after a successful appearance in Dialogues des Carmelites last season, to sing the Mother and the Witch in Hansel han·sel

Stage director Robert Carsen has been engaged to direct a new production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2005, conducted by Seiji Ozawa.

* Soprano Frances Ginzer recently made her Covent Garden debut as Turandot, sharing the role with another Canadian, soprano Anna Shafajinskaya. Ginzer will be singing her first-ever Minnie in Puccini's La Franciulla del West for Vancouver Opera next season.

a plant genus in the family Liliaceae which causes poisoning when eaten by cattle. The toxic agent is lycorine, which causes salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. Called also nerine.
 in Charpentier's Medee for Opera Atelier in Toronto. She makes her Opera Nevada debut in the title role of Rossini's La Cenerentola in 2004.

* Soprano Nathalie Paulin recently made her Montreal Symphony debut in Handel's Messiah. Later in the season, she will sing Despina in Cosi fan Tutte in a debut with Manitoba Opera.

* Tenor Stuart Howe sings his first Gerald in Delibes' Lakme with Opera Ontario in January. Howe recently made his Roy Thomson Hall Roy Thomson Hall is a concert hall located at 60 Simcoe Street in Toronto, Canada. It is the home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.  debut with the Mendelssohn Choir, and was the tenor soloist in the world premiere of the late Srul Irving Glick's Isaiah with the Kingston Symphony. Following highly favorable notices for his first Rodolfo in Opera Ontario's La Boheme (see review page 26), Quebec tenor Marc Hervieux returned to Ontario for Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Orchestra London. Future engagements include the Duke in Rigoletto for both L'Opera de Montreal (Feb. 03) and l'Opera de Quebec (May 03). He reprises REPRISES. Bass-baritone Nathan Berg and soprano Measha Bruggergosman were chosen to sing at the recent reopening of Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, which had been closed for acoustic renovation since last winter. Bruggergosman appropriately sang "Dich teure Halle" from Wagner's Tannhauser. Berg was the soloist in Walton's Belshazzar's Feast. Bruggergosman and tenor Michael Schade were soloists in a Roy Thomson Hall command performance concert on the occasion of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in October. Likewise, countertenor countertenor, a male singing voice in the alto range. Singing in this range requires either a special vocal technique called falsetto, or a high extension of the tenor range.  Daniel Taylor had the honor to sing for the Queen in his hometown of Ottawa at a multi-faith Thanksgiving celebration on Parliament Hill on October 13. Taylor recently made his debuts in Argentina, Brazil and the Proms in London, and will be making his Pittsburgh Opera debut in 2003.
