Artists become creative in units.

ASPIRING city artists have transformed two vacant and drab shopping units into a hotbed of creative talents.

The group of 40 young people have worked alongside professional artists and launched an exhibition showcasing their work, as part of the Gallery 37 project.

They converted the empty units at the Pavillions Shopping Centre into two studios, learning a range of skills and gaining qualifications.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Michael Wilkes, and other officials, launched the project this week which runs until August 21.

Now in its eleventh year, Gallery 37 offers young people from Birmingham aged between 16 and 24, the chance to work alongside professional artists from the Rep theatre, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and SAMPAD.

Coun Martin Mullaney, cabinet member for leisure, sport & culture, said: "Gallery 37 is an exciting and innovative initiative that gives young people the chance to reach their full creative potential."

Sarah Jenkinson, Pavillions marketing manager, said: "With our ideal location here in the city centre, we hope visitors will see the positive impact of involvement in arts for young people in Birmingham. Gallery 37 is one of a series of collaborative projects."
